Dahlia Care/Planting Basics:

In Zone 8b, plant dahlia tubers outdoors in full sun (6-8+ hours) from late April to May, once soil temperatures reach at least 60F/15C) and danger of frost has passed.

Plant dahlias in well-drained soil. Avoid low-lying or waterlogged areas, which are common in early Canadian spring conditions. If your soil is heavy clay, improve drainage by adding compost or well-aged manure.

Large-flowering and tall dahlia varieties benefit from protection from strong winds and may require staking, especially in exposed gardens.

How to Plant Dahlia Tubers:

  1. Dig a hole 4 to 6in deep.

  2. Place the dahlia tuber with the eye or growth point facing upward.

  3. Space plants 12 to 24in apart, depending on the mature size of the variety.

  4. Cover with soil and firm gently.

Do not water immediately after planting. Wait until shoots emerge above the soil to reduce the risk of tuber rot, which is especially important in cooler Canadian climates.

If starting dahlias in pots, use containers with good drainage and transplant outdoors once the danger of frost has passed. Install stakes at planting time for taller varieties to avoid disturbing roots later.

Growing and Caring for Dahlias in Canada

Water dahlias regularly during the summer, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Dahlias prefer consistently moist soil but will suffer in soggy conditions.

  • Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming

  • Stake tall or heavy-flowered varieties for support

  • Dahlias typically bloom from mid-summer through early fall in most Canadian regions

Lifting and Storing Dahlia Tubers for Winter

Because dahlias are not winter-hardy in Canada, tubers must be lifted and stored.

After the first fall frost, foliage will darken, signalling it is time to dig up the tubers.

  1. Carefully lift the tubers from the soil

  2. Trim stems to about 1in above the crown

  3. Rinse off excess soil and allow tubers to dry in a frost-free, well-ventilated area

  4. Store tubers in a cool, dry, frost-free location until spring planting, Optimal storage temperature is 5-8C

  5. DO NOT LET THESE FREEZE they will turn to mush!
